Choosing Your Domain & Simple Hosting Advice

Tuesday, August 26, 2014

The “AMC Help Files” are reference material from my previous 3 books (designed to help you). Instead of “re-hashing” this stuff in the Micro 2 Course, I have chunked the files so you can easily reference what is needed to compliment the action plan in the new course. --------------------------------------- Choosing Your Domain & Simple Hosting Advice --------------------------------------- My Guidelines For Domain Names The best domain names are those that are short, snappy and memorable domains that stand out from the crowd. Keyword-stuffed domain names are not necessary and can actually hurt your site ʼ s rankings. Your goal is to be unique, be fun, be hip, and have a name that you would be proud to put on a business card. But first I want to make sure that you have the following items down in your mind before I go more into the procedure: 1) Don ʼ t Copy Other Names & Watch Out For Trademarks I ʼ ve combined these 2 tips into one suggestion because they directly relate to each other. First, never copy someone else ʼ s domain name by only changing a small letter or number. You will run the risk of getting sued by this company and they ʼ ll have a good chance of shutting you down. Speaking of getting shut down, do not use trademarked terms. Avoid specific product names (although I ʼ ve personally been lucky from my Micro Niche days with this), and avoid anything that would be copying the name of any other business or site. Unfortunately there is not a ʻ list ʼ of terms that you can reference but if you have any bit of common sense then you will be fine. You can also check http://www.copyright.gov/ records/cohm.html for guidance. 2) .Com .Net .Org...............OH MY! Don ʼ t stress over this. Just stick with the .com extension and you will never worry about whether you chose the right one or not. I say that because of course there is nothing wrong with the other extensions but it ʼ s far more easier to just make the most common choice and then end the thought process. Regardless of what you choose, you may want to eventually register all 3 extensions under your domain name so that you own the routes (.com, .org and .net). You do not want someone to come in and copy you (this is especially true if you go with a BRANDED domain). 3) Choose Cool, Fun, Hip & Brandable - But Combine A Keyword If You Wish This may not always be possible depending on your preferences, but if you can you should use both a keyword and a brandable term in your domain name. In other words, use a phrase that people can immediately relate to who is interested in your topics, then add a fun and snappy term to make it the perfect combination. Brandable and fun names are easy to come up with and you can use virtually anything you want. But like I said before, try to make it somewhat related to your niche. Here Is How You Come Up With A Fun & Brandable Domain (Live Examples): For those of you who want to ignore keyword inclusion and just have a snappy, fun and brandable domain name, just combine your main phrase with another phrase that you are fond of. There is nothing hard about this and it takes just a little imagination. Take some time to brainstorm the possibilities. • The #1 Rule With Brandable Domains: Make sure that if someone hears or sees the domain name once, they ʼ ll remember it forever - that they can quickly recall the name when talking to a friend and it ʼ s so simple and snappy that people can ʼ t help but recall it at any time. • The #2 Rule With Brandable Domains: The title should transcend into niche area that you are involved in and have some connection to the overall theme. Yes, rules can be broken, like “GoDaddy” which has absolutely NOTHING to do with hosting services. But branding a name like that takes a lot of time and advertising costs. • The #3 Rule With Brandable Domains: Go broad on your scope when considering a domain name. Even though the name will not be 100% keyword focused you can still trap yourself if you are not careful. A Few Live Examples Here are some brandable domain examples to get your brain juices flowing, which of course follow all 3 rules I mention above: Easy to remember,
